Khao San Road = Bangkok?
You hear the name everywhere: Khao San Road. For many, it’s synonymous with Bangkok. The neon lights, the cheap buckets of cocktails and the smell of pad thai on every street corner attract millions of travellers every year. But let’s be honest: although it’s an iconic place to spend an evening out, it’s one of the worst places in the city to actually unpack your suitcase.
In this article, we explain why hotels in the “Old City” often fail to live up to expectations, and where you should book instead for an authentic and comfortable experience in Bangkok.
What makes the Khao San Road area unique?
Khao San Road is the epicentre of backpacker culture in Southeast Asia. The crowd consists mainly of young travellers, partygoers and day-trippers seeking the ‘vibe’ of the film The Beach. The atmosphere is chaotic, noisy and commercial. You’ll find everything from insects on a stick to bargain-basement massages and pushy tailor shops.
It’s a unique place to visit once, but it has little to do with the real, modern Bangkok. It’s a bubble that’s entirely geared towards tourism.

Why (not) choose the Old City?
Many people look for a hotel in the Old City (Banglamphu) because they want to be close to the main attractions, such as:
- The Grand Palace
- Wat Pho (The Reclining Buddha)
- Wat Arun (across the river)
The downside: Although you’re close to the temples, the area is very poorly connected to the rest of the city. There is no BTS Skytrain or MRT station near Khao San Road. So you’re completely reliant on expensive taxis or tuk-tuks, and the drivers here are notorious for their scams. What’s more, the music in the party hostels doesn’t stop until the small hours.
Our advice: Visit Khao San Road for a beer, but stay in the Riverside or Sukhumvit districts. Here you’ll find luxury, peace and quiet, and direct access to public transport.

Choose a hotel in a better neighbourhood of Bangkok
Instead of a noisy hostel in Khao San, we recommend staying in the nearby Riverside district (for culture) or Sukhumvit (for shopping and comfort).
| Characteristic | Riverside (Luxury & Culture) | Sukhumvit (Modern & Shopping) |
| The Atmosphere | Stately, romantic and peaceful. Stunning views over the river. | Vibrant, cosmopolitan and full of non-stop action. |
| Transport | Boats (Chao Phraya Express) and the BTS (at Saphan Taksin). | Excellent: The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro intersect here at every point. |
| Places of interest | Close to the major temples, the Grand Palace and Chinatown. | Modern shopping centres (Terminal 21, EmQuartier) and trendy rooftop bars. |
| Nightlife | Stylish hotel bars and cosy terraces along the quay. | An endless choice: from off-the-beaten-track bars to the biggest nightclubs. |
| Ideal for… | Couples, families and culture lovers. | Shoppers, digital nomads and party-goers (who are looking for luxury). |
| Biggest drawback | Slightly more expensive and a bit quieter outside the hotels in the evening. | The notorious traffic jams (stick to the underground!). |
Warning: The notorious “Tuk-Tuk Scam” around Khao San Road and the Old City
If you do decide to visit the Old City, be prepared for the most common scam in Bangkok. It often starts with a friendly man (sometimes even wearing an official-looking uniform) who approaches you at the entrance to a temple or near Khao San Road.
How the scam works:
- The “Temple is Closed” lie: The con artist tells you, with a straight face, that the Grand Palace or Wat Pho is closed today due to a “special Buddhist holiday” or a visit by the king.
- The alternative: He offers to take you by tuk-tuk for just 20 or 40 baht (an absurdly low price) to other “secret” temples that are actually open.
- The hidden stop: On the way, you’ll be ‘coincidentally’ dropped off at a tailor’s or a jeweller’s. This is because the driver receives petrol vouchers or a commission if you go inside.
- The pressure: In these shops, you’re pressured into buying suits that are far too expensive or fake jewellery.
Our tip: Never believe anyone on the street who tells you that a tourist attraction is closed. Just walk to the official entrance and check for yourself. And remember: if a tuk-tuk ride sounds too cheap to be true, it usually is.

Drinks: cheap buckets of mixed drinks on Khao San Road or the real class of Bangkok?
The 3 best rooftop bars in Sukhumvit (Forget the plastic cups!)
Whilst on Khao San Road you’ll often find yourself sitting on a rickety stool by the roadside, the rooftop bars in Sukhumvit offer views you’ll never forget. Three of our favourites:
1. Tichuca Rooftop Bar (The “Avatar” bar)
This is currently the most ‘Instagrammable’ spot in Bangkok. Located on the 46th floor of the T-One building, you’ll recognise this bar straight away by the giant, glowing LED tree that dances above the bar. The atmosphere is jungle-inspired, the cocktails are top-notch and the 360-degree view is breathtaking.
- Best for: The perfect photo and a young, trendy vibe.
2. Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar
Located on top of the Marriott Sukhumvit (near Thong Lor BTS station). What makes Octave unique is that there are no glass walls on the top floor, giving you an unobstructed view of the skyline. It’s the perfect spot for a sundowner during golden hour.
- Best for: A romantic sunset and a relaxed atmosphere.
3. Pastel Rooftop Bar
For those who love a Mediterranean atmosphere and a stylish crowd. Pastel (at the Aira Hotel) combines fantastic food with a chic party atmosphere. No noisy crowds of tourists, just elegant music and a beautifully lit terrace.
- Best for: An evening of luxury, fine wines and “see and be seen”.
Frequently asked questions about Khao San Road
Is Khao San Road safe?
Generally speaking, yes, but be on the lookout for pickpockets and the well-known ‘tuk-tuk scams’, where drivers claim the temples are closed in order to take you to expensive jewellers.
How do I get from Khao San Road to the rest of the city?
As there is no underground, the best option is to take the Chao Phraya Express Boat from Phra Arthit Pier. It’s cheap, quick and you’ll avoid Bangkok’s notorious traffic jams.
What is the best alternative to Khao San Road?
For an authentic atmosphere, we recommend Riverside. For those who enjoy shopping, modern restaurants and the convenience of the metro (BTS), Sukhumvit is the best choice.
Is there a metro or Skytrain station near Khao San Road?
No, and that’s exactly the problem. The nearest stations (such as MRT Sam Yot) are still about a 20- to 30-minute walk or a journey in the heat. If you want to explore the rest of Bangkok without getting stuck in traffic, you’re much better off in areas such as Sukhumvit or Siam.
How do I get from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Khao San Road?
There is no direct train service. You’ll have to take the S1 bus (which takes a long time) or a taxi (expect to pay 400–500 baht including tolls). From areas such as Sukhumvit or Phaya Thai, you can simply take the lightning-fast Airport Rail Link, which saves a lot of time and hassle.
Is Khao San Road suitable for families with children?
To be honest? No. Loud music thumps through the walls late into the night, the streets are packed, and the atmosphere is all about partying. For families, the Riverside neighbourhood is a much better choice: there you’ll find peace and quiet, plenty of space, and child-friendly resorts with lovely swimming pools.
When is the best time to visit Khao San Road?
If you want to soak up the atmosphere without the total chaos, go at the end of the afternoon (around 5 pm). The evening market is just getting underway, but the music isn’t at full volume yet. By 9 pm, the street turns into an open-air nightclub.
Is there somewhere safe to leave my luggage near Khao San Road?
There are plenty of small luggage storage shops, but security standards vary greatly. If you’re not staying in the area, it’s a bit of a hassle to lug your suitcases around here. If you book a hotel in Sukhumvit, you can often use the modern lockers at the MRT stations or simply leave your suitcases at the hotel reception whilst you explore the city.
Conclusion: Go for the ‘Best of Both Worlds’
KKhao San Road is an iconic place that you simply must see at least once. The energy, the chaos and the quirky markets are all part of the Bangkok experience. But there’s a big difference between visiting a neighbourhood and staying the night there.
By booking your hotel in Riverside or Sukhumvit, you can enjoy a holiday without the downsides of the Old City. You’ll escape the scammers and the noise, whilst still being within easy reach of the action.
- Choose Riverside if you love romance, culture and the convenience of a boat. You’ll be in the Old City within 15 minutes, but you’ll sleep peacefully by the water.
- Choose Sukhumvit if you want to enjoy the best shopping centres, trendy rooftop bars and a lightning-fast connection to the Skytrain (BTS).
Stop searching for mediocre hostels and treat yourself to an unforgettable stay in Bangkok.
