Chaweng – The Buzzing Heart of Koh Samui
Chaweng is Koh Samui’s longest and most famous beach, and also its most touristy and lively. By day you can enjoy water activities and a wide stretch of sand; by night, the famous Chaweng Walking Street comes alive with bars, clubs, restaurants, and massage parlors. It’s the perfect base if you love convenience, choice, and a buzzing atmosphere.

Bophut (Fisherman’s Village) – Charming and Authentic
On the north coast lies Bophut, with its characterful Fisherman’s Village full of wooden shopfronts, charming restaurants, and the well-known Friday night market. This area is quieter than Chaweng but just as lively when it comes to dining and nightlife, and mainly attracts travelers who love atmosphere and boutique accommodation. East of the airport lies Choeng Mon, one of the quietest and most family-friendly beaches on Koh Samui. The shallow, sheltered water makes it ideal for children, and the area is known for its high-end resorts, such as the world-famous Six Senses Samui, perched high on the hill with views over the bay.

Lamai & Maenam – Quieter and More Affordable
Prefer to stay a bit further from the hustle and bustle of Chaweng? Lamai, the island’s second-largest beach, offers a quieter version of Chaweng with its own (smaller) walking street. On the north coast lies Maenam, a favorite among long-term stayers and expats for its relaxed, local character and affordable prices, here you’ll find, among others, the W Koh Samui, right on the beach.

How to Get to Koh Samui: Plane or Boat?
The fastest way to reach Koh Samui is with a direct flight to Samui International Airport (USM), largely served by Bangkok Airways, which holds a near-exclusive concession here. A flight from Bangkok takes around 70 to 80 minutes and lands at one of Thailand’s most unique airports, with open-air pavilions instead of an enclosed terminal. The downside: with little competition, ticket prices are considerably higher than flights to, say, Phuket or Chiang Mai.
Prefer to travel on a lower budget? Fly to Surat Thani on the mainland instead (served by several budget airlines) and then take the ferry (about 1 to 1.5 hours) to Koh Samui. Most providers combine the flight and the ferry crossing into one through-ticket, including bus transport between the airport and the pier.
The absolute budget option is the night train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, followed by the ferry, a journey that quickly adds up to 10 to 12 hours, but the cheapest way to reach the island. We’d recommend avoiding the (night) bus for this: given Thailand’s notorious road-accident statistics and the increased risk of theft on board, we strongly advise against this option. The train is much safer and more comfortable.

Getting Around: Distance to the Airport and Transport on Koh Samui
Samui International Airport is located on the island’s northeast coast, close to Chaweng and Bophut. Travel time to the other beaches is a bit longer.

Getting Around Koh Samui: Songthaew, Grab, and Scooter
Koh Samui has a different transport culture than, say, Bangkok or Chiang Mai. These are the most commonly used options:
- Songthaew (shared pick-up trucks): The most commonly used and cheapest transport on the island. These red or yellow trucks run fixed routes along the ring road around the island; you hop on and pay a fixed price per person (usually 30 to 60 THB, depending on the distance) when you get off.
- Grab: Grab is available on Koh Samui and works similarly to the rest of Thailand, usually 20 to 30% cheaper than a regular taxi. Note: Grab generally isn’t allowed to pick up directly at the airport, so arrange separate transport from the airport before you arrive. Coverage is also less reliable in some west-coast areas than in Chaweng and Bophut.
- Taxi: Regular taxis on Koh Samui rarely use a meter, and prices are usually higher than Grab. Negotiate the price clearly beforehand.
- Renting a scooter: Popular and flexible, but be careful: the number of scooter accidents among tourists is relatively high on the island. Always wear a helmet and check whether your insurance provides coverage.
Practical tip: Within Chaweng and Bophut itself, plenty is within walking distance, but for a visit to another beach or one of the inland excursions, a songthaew, Grab, or rented scooter is a lot more comfortable.

While most Thai destinations see their wettest months between May and October, on Koh Samui most of the rain actually falls in October, November, and sometimes early December.
