Canoeing on the Sok River in Khao Sok: Wildlife by Kayak

Khao Sok kayaker paddling through a lush jungle river

Published on 3 October 2026.

The easiest way to see animals in Khao Sok is not on foot but on the water: in a canoe or kayak drifting silently down the Sok River, with the jungle as a green tunnel around you. We did the trip ourselves and saw more animals in two hours than on many a hike: kingfishers, water monitors, snakes on overhanging branches and macaques that let themselves be admired from the trees.

In brief:
Price: approx. 1,000 to 1,500 THB p.p., incl. hotel pickup, canoe/kayak
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours, no park entrance fee needed (outside the park)
Departure: pickup at your lodge
Best for: everyone, including children (from 5 years) and the less athletic
Adventurous? July to August: stronger currents and more adventurous rapids, other months: smooth, relaxed paddling

What does the canoe trip look like?

You are picked up at your lodge and taken to the starting point upstream. There you get into a canoe or a kayak. In an hour and a half to two hours you drift calmly down the river, under overhanging trees and past limestone walls, while the professional guide points out what you would miss: a snake coiled on a branch, a water monitor on a rock, a group of macaques high in the treetops. It is nowhere whitewater; the river flows calmly and the level is doable for everyone.

Practical tips

  • Go early or late in the day. In the early morning and late afternoon the river is at its quietest and the animals at their most active; in the middle of the day they take a siesta too.
  • Bring a dry bag. You will not get wet from the kayak itself, but paddle drips and the occasional splash come with the territory. That keeps your phone and camera dry.
  • Apply sunscreen. Parts of the river lie fully in the sun; a cap and sunscreen make the difference.
  • Stay quiet around wildlife. The quieter the kayak, the closer you get. The guides know exactly where the regular residents sit.
  • Combine smartly. The kayak trip is half a day; with the night safari afterward you have seen the river and the nocturnal jungle in one day.

Prices and duration

A canoe trip of an hour and a half to two hours costs about 1,000 to 1,500 THB per person, including hotel pickup, kayak and professional guide. Longer variants combine the trip with a lunch or a visit to an elephant sanctuary. Preferably book online with a reliable provider with professional guides. Because the trip takes place outside the national park, you pay no park entrance fee for it.

Frequently asked questions about canoeing in Khao Sok

Is the canoe trip suitable for children and the less athletic?

Yes, the water is calm and life jackets are standard. This is the most accessible excursion in Khao Sok; perfectly doable with children (from 5 years) or without any canoeing experience.

Which animals do you see from the canoe?

Almost guaranteed kingfishers, herons and water monitors (large lizards on the banks), very often macaques and tree snakes on overhanging branches. Everything at a safe distance; the guide shows you where the animals are.

Canoeing or tubing?

The canoe/kayak is good all year and the best choice for wildlife (quieter, easier to steer). Tubing is mostly fun at higher water (June through December) and more of a fun activity than a nature experience.

Is the trip possible in the rainy season too?

Yes, usually just fine: the river then has more water and the jungle is at its greenest. Only at very high water levels after heavy rain are trips postponed.
