What Can You Expect From a Thai Cooking Class?
Most cooking classes on Koh Samui start with a visit to a local market, where your chef-instructor guides you in recognizing and selecting fresh ingredients such as herbs, vegetables, and spices. Back at the cooking school, you then prepare a number of classics yourself, usually a choice of dishes such as pad thai, green or red curry, tom yum soup, som tam (papaya salad), and mango with sticky rice for dessert.
We personally found the market visit surprisingly educational, seeing and smelling fresh Thai ingredients (such as galangal, kaffir lime leaf and various types of Thai basil) gave us far more insight into why Thai food tastes the way it does than we expected from “just a cooking class.”

How Long Does a Cooking Class Take and What Does It Cost?
Most courses last half a day (around 3 to 4 hours), and are suitable for complete beginners and experienced home cooks alike. Expect to pay around 2,000 to 2,900 THB per person, depending on the number of dishes and whether a market visit is included.
Practical Tips, From Our Own Experience
- Let them know about dietary requirements in advance. Most schools can easily accommodate vegetarian or allergy-friendly dishes, as long as you mention it beforehand.
- Come hungry. You’ll taste and eat everything you make yourself, which adds up to quite a few dishes in one day.
- Ask about the recipe booklet. Many schools send you home with a booklet of the recipes, so you can recreate the dishes yourself later. We still use ours regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions About a Thai Cooking Class on Koh Samui
Is a Thai cooking class suitable for children or families?
Yes, most cooking schools on Koh Samui are well suited to children. Option 1 above (with the local Samui family) even has its own play area, so the kids can enjoy themselves while the parents cook. Always let the school know in advance if you’re bringing children, so they can adjust things like spice levels and tailor the guidance accordingly.
Is a Thai cooking class suitable for complete beginners?
Yes, most schools are designed for all levels, from people who’ve never held a wok to experienced home cooks.
Do I need to mention if I’m vegetarian or vegan?
Yes, always let them know in advance when booking. Most schools can easily offer a vegetarian or vegan version of the dishes.
Is a market visit worth it, or can I skip it?
We definitely recommend choosing a course that includes a market visit, it genuinely adds to the experience and helps you understand the ingredients better. The market visit is one of the most educational parts, since you learn to recognize, smell, and select fresh Thai ingredients together with your instructor. This gives you a much deeper insight into Thai cuisine than if you start straight at the cooking school. Just check when booking whether the market visit is included in the program.
Do I get to take the recipes home?
At most schools, yes, usually in the form of a recipe booklet. Ask about this if it isn’t clearly stated when booking.
How do you choose the best Thai cooking school on Koh Samui?
What we personally pay the most attention to: whether a market visit is included (that’s the difference between following a recipe and actually understanding why something tastes Thai), how small the group is (the smaller, the more personal attention and help with every step), and whether you get to choose which dishes you make. Before booking, also check recent reviews, not just the rating, but especially what people say specifically about the instructor and the atmosphere.
Why is a Thai cooking class worth doing during your holiday on Koh Samui?
What made a cooking class different for us than a regular sightseeing day: you’re the one holding the knife and wok, instead of just watching. Afterwards, you suddenly understand why a curry tastes the way it does, and thanks to the recipe booklet, that knowledge doesn’t have to stay in Thailand. For a day away from the beach or temples, but with something to bring home, this is one of the few excursions that genuinely delivers on that.

Conclusion
A Thai cooking class is one of the most relaxing yet educational excursions you can do on Koh Samui, perfect for a day without having to travel far from the beach. We still look back on our own cooking class with pleasure, and use the recipes regularly at home.
